Lily Allen is opening up ever so slightly about the headline-generating lyrics featured on her critically acclaimed new album, West End Girl .

The 40-year-old singer got candid in conversation with The Times about the record, which documents the breakdown of her marriage with David Harbour .

During the chat, she also spoke to the character “Madeline” featured on the album , whose name pops up on her husband’s phone.

When asked who Madeline, she responded: “A fictional character.”

When further asked if the character is a construct of others, she simply said: “Yes.”

On the song “Madeline,” she sings of their relationship’s apparent arrangement.

“We had an arrangement / Be discreet and don’t be blatant / There had to be payment / It had to be with strangers,” she sings.
