FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts — Shedeur Sanders' back injury will prevent him from serving as the Browns ' backup quarterback when they play at the New England Patriots.
Sanders will be inactive, and is not designated as the Browns' emergency No. 3 quarterback. He appeared on the injury report the day before the game with the back issue.
Bailey Zappe, who was elevated from the practice squad to the gameday roster, will serve as Dillon Gabriel's backup. It's a homecoming for Zappe, who spent the 2022-23 seasons with the Patriots, appearing in 14 games with eight starts. Buy Cleveland Browns tickets
Sanders came out on the field at Gillette Stadium a little after 10:30 a.m., accompanied by members of the training staff, quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.
