LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KRQE) – The trial for a former Las Cruces police officer accused of shooting and killing a woman is expected to begin Monday. Felipe Hernandez is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 45-year-old Teresa Gomez.

In October of 2023, Hernandez found Teresa Gomez and her companion in a car at a housing complex. According to court documents, Hernandez recognizes the man as someone who's been ordered to stay off the property.

After a heated exchange, Gomez got back in the driver's seat and took off. That's when court documents state Hernandez opened fire, killing Gomez.

The trial for the former officer is expected to start Monday and last four days.
