Let those five words sink in for a moment.
That they became reality on Oct. 26, 2025, is not the most shocking thing. After Penn State jettisoned James Franklin after a three-game losing streak earlier this season, anything seemed possible.
But if you’d told me the night of Aug. 30, less than two months back, in the afterglow of LSU’s gritty 17-10 win at preseason No. 4 Clemson, that this would be Kelly’s fate, I’d have thought there was no way.
I believed then, as most everyone who follows college football did, that Kelly’s heroes were on their way to a big season. Surely a berth in the College Football Playoff. Maybe much more than that.
