A police officer who was behind the wheel when an Aboriginal teenager fatally crashed his trail bike into his unmarked police car said it “all happened so quickly” in an interview after the crash, a court has been told.
Benedict Bryant, 47, was behind the wheel when 16-year-old Jai Kalani Wright rode a stolen trail bike and hit the vehicle in Alexandria, in Sydney’s inner city, on February, 9, 2022.
The teen suffered critical head injuries and died at Prince Alfred hospital the following day.
Sergeant Bryant has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death.
He attended the Darlinghurst District Court on Monday when closing submissions began in his judge-alone trial before Judge Jane Culver.
