Aside from losing a grip of a Big South 5A/6A title, Friday’s loss at Ashbrook also cost Crest a potential No. 1 seed heading into the NCHSAA 5A state playoffs.
Ashbrook scored the game’s final 21 points, in addition to stopping Crest at the 1-yard line as time expired to claim a 21-14 victory in Gastonia.
Coming in as Class 5A’s top team according to the NCHSAA’s RPI system, the loss dropped Crest to No. 5, guaranteeing it at best one home playoff game, along with potential trips to Hickory and East Lincoln.
Crest travels to rival Kings Mountain on Friday for its regular season finale.
