BRISTOL, Conn. (WTNH) -- The Board of Education in Bristol is considering allowing armed security guards in schools. The board chair says the community has been discussing this over the weekend.

School resource officers are active members of the police department. These would be school district guards, and the question is, should they carry guns?

At the top of the list would be the district’s director of school safety and security. The Board of Education chair said they are considering a new policy that would allow the person in that position to carry a gun on school grounds.

Board chair Shelby Pons said no guard would be allowed to carry a gun on school grounds without strict training and oversight. Funding for school resource officers comes through the police budget.
