PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A so-called "housing progress report" shows Providence issued permits for nearly 900 new residential units in fiscal year 2025, a pace city officials said "outperformed" larger cities like Boston and New York City.
On Monday morning, the city released its 2025 Housing Progress Report, which noted several priorities related to production, preservation and protection.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said "no single solution" will solve the housing shortage.
"That’s why our effort brings together every tool we have available: collaboration across all levels of government, strong partnerships with organizations in and out of our city, private and public investment, and the support of our community," Smiley said in the report.
