KALAMAZOO, MI -- A portion of a busy Kalamazoo street is slated for a road diet in 2026.
Cork Street, between Westnedge Avenue and Portage Street, will be reduced from four lanes to three as part of a larger project.
Bike lanes will be added on each side of the road, along with several pedestrian islands.
The project also includes replacing existing traffic lights with new models, repairing existing sidewalks and add new connections where pedestrian paths are missing.
The city has seen several water main breaks in this area, said Kalamazoo Public Services Director James Baker. A water main reconstruction project along Burdick Street projected to begin in 2026 may include work on Cork Street, but plans aren’t set, yet.
