World Central Kitchen is set to distribute free meals to federal employees and their families in Washington, D.C., Monday, as food banks sound an alarm about increased need during the government shutdown.

José Andrés’ nonprofit, which has provided food assistance in disaster zones and war-torn regions, including Gaza, is setting up a distribution site in D.C.'s Navy Yard neighborhood.

Federal workers and their families can get freshly prepared meals at Washington Canal Park (200 M Street SE) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday. You can find details and updates about potential future distributions on their website.

The shutdown reached day 27 on Monday with no signs that lawmakers are close to a government funding deal.
