HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - State Sen. Brenton Awa R-Windward Oahu, has confirmed his decision to run for Congress.
The former television journalist announced Sunday via social media his decision to run for the GOP nomination for the second congressional district seat currently held by Democrat U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda.
Awa is the current minority leader in the senate, where he has served since 2022.
Awa will not have to resign from his Senate seat to run.
In May, the republican lawmaker told Spotlight Now that while his party has not been able to pass many laws here, being in Washington D.C. could bring new opportunities for him and Hawaii.
The 2026 primary election is set for August, followed by general elections in November.
