CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Hurricane Melissa has intensified to a Category 5 storm with winds reaching 165 mph, and is expected to make landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday, marking the first time the island will experience a Category 5 hurricane.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami has issued warnings for Jamaica, advising residents to seek shelter due to the dangerous conditions expected from Monday through Tuesday. Melissa is set to impact southeastern Cuba and the Bahamas later in the week.

Forecasters have warned that Hurricane Melissa could cause catastrophic flash flooding, life-threatening landslides, and extremely strong winds across the Caribbean. Jamaica, which last experienced a major hurricane in 1988, is bracing for what could be a historic storm.
