The federal government shutdown is nearing a month, and food insecurity is top of mind for many Americans.

In October, the USDA announced funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, would not be available beyond Nov. 1.

This lapse in funding could leave more than 600,000 Kentuckians without food assistance as the holidays approach.

In Indiana, another roughly 600,000 Hoosiers are also at risk of being without food assistance.

The Trump administration has rejected the idea of using roughly $5 billion in contingency funds to keep food aid flowing into November amid the government shutdown , according to a Department of Agriculture memo that surfaced Friday.
