ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - ProChem, Inc. and the Western Virginia Water Authority (Authority) reached a legal settlement related to the discharge of hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid, (HFPO-DA), also known as GenX chemicals , according to Authority.

The Authority also said ProChem agreed to pay $1.9 million to offset expenses to treat water from the Spring Hollow Reservoir. Before that, ProChem implemented business process and oversight changes to lessen the likelihood of the situation happening again. As part of the settlement, ProChem agreed to additional oversight by the Authority.

One of thousands of ‘forever chemicals’ used in manufacturing, HFPO-DA is used in a variety of consumer products such as non-stick cookware, upholstery, cosmetics and other items.
