A day after firing coach Brian Kelly, LSU is also making a change at offensive play-caller.
The Tigers fired offensive coordinator Joe Sloan on Monday, as was first reported by Pete Thamel. Per Thamel, former Florida State offensive coordinator and current LSU analyst Alex Atkins will take over as play-caller for the remainder of the season.
Sloan, who was previously the offensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech, joined the Tigers' staff in 2022 as quarterbacks coach. He helped develop Heisman-winner Jayden Daniels and was promoted to co-offensive coordinator following the 2023 season after Mike Denbrock's departure to Notre Dame.
LSU's offense took a bit of a step back in 2024 after losing Daniels, and it has struggled mightily so far this season. The Tigers currently rank 14th in the SEC in yards per game (355.5) and 12th in points per game (25.4). Sloan's unit has also struggled mightily to run the ball, and LSU currently has the SEC's worst rushing offense for the second year in a row.
Kelly reportedly offered to fire Sloan on Sunday before he was dismissed himself, but he also apparently wanted to part ways with offensive line coach Brad Davis, which may have been a factor that led to Kelly's firing.
Now, it will be a clean break from both head coach and play-caller as LSU begins its second head coaching search in the last four years.
