BOSTON —
The second man to receive a pig kidney transplant at Mass General Brigham had the kidney removed last week, officials confirmed Monday.
Tim Andrews , of New Hampshire, set a world record — living with the genetically modified kidney for 271 days.
Doctors removed the kidney after the organ's function began to decline. Andrews will now resume dialysis and will remain on the list for a human donor kidney.
The hospital released a statement, saying in part: "Tim has been a selfless medical pioneer and an inspiration to patients with kidney failure around the world, and we extend to Tim our most heartfelt thanks."
A third patient received a pig kidney transplant at MGB earlier this year, and the hospital said the research will continue.
