BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) - The last of the three large aging concrete parking ramps that were built during urban renewal in downtown Binghamton is slated for demolition.

Mayor Jared Kraham says the city is now accepting bids to tear down the State Street Parking Garage.

Kraham says the structure is well beyond its useful life and no longer has a functioning elevator. He says that with the construction in recent years of the Henry Street and Water Street ramps, he believes the large ramp, with several levels above and below ground, is no longer needed.

Kraham says with more employees working from home, there's less need for monthly parking spaces downtown, and the State Street ramp has not been near its 500-spot capacity.

The city plans to temporarily replace it with a surface lot,
