PALO, Iowa (KWWL) — NextEra Energy and Google have announced a significant collaboration to restart the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Palo, Iowa.
Google has signed a 25-year agreement to purchase power from the 615-MW Duane Arnold plant to support its cloud and AI infrastructure in Iowa. Central Iowa Power Cooperative will also purchase a portion of the plant's output.
The plant, shut down in 2020, is set to resume operations by early 2029, pending regulatory approvals.
John Ketchum, CEO of NextEra Energy, emphasized the project's role in advancing nuclear technology and creating jobs. "Our partnership with Google not only brings nuclear energy back to Iowa — it also accelerates the development of next-generation nuclear technology," Ketchum said.
