Victoria is reopening the troubled Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre two years after it shut its doors, which the Opposition claims is an admission from the Allan government that it has “failed” after it boasted about low incarceration rates.
The 60-year-old youth crime centre, the site of a massive riot in 2023 during which staff were taken hostage , will reopen early next year, The Herald Sun reported.
Last month, the Allan government was warned the state's prisons could be full by mid-2026 due to an influx of inmates under tougher new bail laws.
Senior sources told the masthead it would cost millions to make the centre fit for purpose and would require infrastructure and security upgrades.
