NEWTON COUNTY, Ark. — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is speaking with Ozarks First, detailing what’s next in their investigation into a fatal bear attack.

Late last week, it was announced that a bear killed as part of that investigation was not the one who attacked and killed 60-year-old Springfield-native Max Thomas.

“We had it tested for its DNA. We took some of the DNA from the victim and compared the two, and unfortunately, the bear didn't match it. It was bear DNA that was found on the victim, but it didn't match the bear that we put down,” Keith Stephens with Arkansas Game and Fish said. “This is really a weird situation.
