SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - Monday night, the Sioux City City Council approved the “re-decking” of the 6th Street Bridge, which spans the Floyd River.

The city will now get bids on the project.

The contract gives the contractor 140 working days to complete the reconstruction on the bridge. City engineer Gordon Phair says the bridge will be a major artery for traffic while the new Gordon Drive Viaduct is built starting in 2027.

He says now is the time to get the 6th Street Bridge fixed.

“The deck, it’s time for replacement. It’s a full deck, all the way down to the beams; we’re going to reinforce it, put new concrete on it, because it’s failing, it’s due,” said Phair.

The reconstruction plans also include building a 10-foot bike lane on the south side of the bridge, which would make the bridge
