Fears are mounting for the future of one of Maitland's most recognisable landmarks, with Maitland City Council making an urgent plea for state government funding to address the accelerating deterioration of the iconic chimney stack at Walka Water Works.
In the latest chapter of ongoing challenges plaguing the historic site, councillors voted on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, to write directly to Maitland MP, Jenny Aitchison, seeking "urgent support and funding" to combat the "continuing deterioration and brick failure" of the chimney.
The move, proposed by Cr Warrick Penfold, comes amid growing community concern, highlighted by recent social media posts, including images shared by resident Rob Rouse, showing visible gaps and crumbling brickwork near the chimney's summit.
