OREGON CITY, Ore. (KPTV) - The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office has referred an investigation to the District Attorney’s Office after they say a 26-year-old inmate died following an assault.

While collecting meal trays just after 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 18, the sheriff’s office says a deputy witnessed an assault in one of the cells.

Deputies pulled an unconscious Reece Warren Richeson, 26, out of the cell, who was taken to the hospital and died in the early morning hours of Oct. 21.

The sheriff’s office says Sapastian Year, 23, shared a cell with Richeson since Oct. 10 and is accused in the assault.

The incident is still under investigation.

Year is currently in custody at the Clackamas County Jail.
