An 80-year-old woman has tragically been found dead on Lizard Island, a remote location off the North Queensland coast, after failing to return to her cruise ship. The incident occurred on Saturday, 25 October, when the woman, who was travelling solo on a Coral Expeditions cruise, disembarked to explore the island but did not make it back in time for the vessel's departure. Lizard Island, situated approximately 250 kilometres northeast of Cairns, is known for its stunning coral reefs and is a popular destination for scuba diving and snorkelling. Coral Expeditions' chief executive, Mark Fifield, confirmed the unfortunate news, stating that the crew raised the alarm after the woman was reported missing. A search-and-rescue operation was promptly initiated, involving both land and sea efforts. Fifield expressed condolences, saying, "While investigations into the incident are continuing, we are deeply sorry that this has occurred and are offering our full support to the woman’s family." Emergency services were alerted on Saturday evening, and the woman's body was discovered the following morning. Queensland Police have stated that her death is being treated as sudden and non-suspicious. The cruise company is cooperating with the ongoing investigation and has been in contact with the woman's family to provide support during this difficult time. As the investigation continues, Coral Expeditions has refrained from making further comments until more information is available.
