LANCASTER, OH – The Lancaster Police Department is recognizing one of its own for going above and beyond the call of duty. Officer Smart was recently commended for her compassion, professionalism, and service to the community after taking it upon herself to help a family in need during a recent welfare check.

According to a letter of commendation submitted by Sgt. A. Dilley, Officer Smart responded to a wellbeing check on October 18, 2025 , where she encountered a single mother and her children struggling with basic needs. Acting on her own initiative, she purchased food for the family from Little Caesars—an act Sgt. Dilley described as one of many quiet gestures of kindness Officer Smart performs without seeking recognition.
