Despite "Slow Down, Move Over" laws in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., a new study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reveals that one in three drivers still fail to comply with these critical roadside safety rules . In 2024, 46 emergency responders, including law enforcement officers, tow truck operators, and fire/EMS personnel, lost their lives after being struck by vehicles while working roadside incidents.

The study highlights that while 64% of drivers either slowed down or changed lanes when passing roadside incidents, 36% did neither, with slowing down being particularly rare even in states with specific speed reduction requirements. This non-compliance poses a significant risk to roadside workers and stranded motorists, underscoring the importance of these laws.
