A former Tory minister blocked the Scottish Government's flagship recycling scheme in order to give the SNP a “black eye”, a court has been told. ‌

Green MSP Lorna Slater accused former Scottish Secretary Alister Jack of acting in “bad faith” when he refused to grant an exclusion for glass bottles under the internal market act (IMA). ‌

The decision led to the Scottish Government axing its much-hyped deposit return scheme (DRS) in embarrassing circumstances in 2023. ‌

Slater, who was a serving Government minister at the time, was strongly criticised by opposition parties at the time for failing to get to grips with the scheme.

A UK-wide DRS is planned but it is not expected to begin before 2027.
