MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) - E-bike users could soon see new regulations for state forests and parks, including speed limits.

The Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation is seeking public comment on a draft policy that would include e-bikes in the current policy with other users, including mountain bikes and horseback riding.

Under the proposal, a 20-mph speed limit would apply to all state park roads and multi-use trails.

In addition, only Class 1 e-bikes -- those that provide assistance only when the user is pedaling -- would be allowed on natural surface trails designated for bikes. Other roads and multi-use trails would allow all forms of e-bikes.

The department is also proposing differentiating the use of forest highways by road classification for bicycles and horseback riding.
