MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) - Wisconsin’s attorney general is joining other states in a federal lawsuit over SNAP food assistance benefits.

The action is filed in U.S. district court in Massachusetts.

Wisconsin and 24 other states, and the District of Columbia, are suing the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Office of Management and Budget, and the federal government after the USDA announced food assistance benefits would not continue in November during the government shutdown.

Around 40 million Americans currently use the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, including 700,000 in Wisconsin.

The lawsuit argues the government has the funds to continue the program during the shutdown and notes that this would be the first suspension of benefits in the program’s history.
