(WTAJ) — Shoppers may want to dig through their couch cushions and coin jars this week, as Giant Eagle is turning spare change into serious savings for one day only.

Giant Eagle announced on Saturday, Nov. 1, that customers can bring in their pennies to any Giant Eagle or Market District location between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and receive a Giant Eagle gift card worth double the value of their coins.

Each transaction requires at least 50 cents in pennies, which will earn a $1 gift card, and customers can exchange up to $100 worth of pennies, totalling a $200 gift card.

The event, called "Penny Exchange Day," is part of Giant Eagle's effort to maintain an adequate supply of pennies as the U.S. Department of the Treasury phases out production. The Federal Reserve has also limited penny delive
