People in Jamaica had been forced to undergo an agonising wait for days ahead of Hurricane Melissa’s arrival.
The whole storm system was travelling towards them at less than five miles an hour.
But within it, strengthening and swirling winds and huge amounts of rainfall.
By the time it properly hit a few hours ago, its high winds had already killed people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Jamaica is well used to storms but not with the strength of Melissa and the bulk of its population lives in vulnerable coastal areas.
