ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Joel Frater, while living in Jamaica, remembers the terror of Hurricane Gilbert.
Today, from his home in the Rochester area, Frater is waiting like everyone to see the impact of Hurricane Melissa.
But he’s also doing more than waiting.
As president of Rochester Jamaican Organization, Frater is assembling a response to the impending disaster.
“We’ve learned from other experiences like Andrew and other storms that have impacted the island,” Frater said. “So it’s a matter of leaning into that knowledge, leaning into that technology, to prepare ourselves to respond in a more positive and proactive way.”
Adam Chodak interviewed Frater and the owner of People’s Choice Kitchen in Rochester to hear about the local response to Hurricane Melissa.
