Connecticut is joining 24 other states in a lawsuit seeking to force the Trump administration to fund SNAP benefits on Saturday, even if the federal government remains closed.
The lawsuit specifically seeks an order forcing the U.S. Department of Administration to utilize a contingency fund, estimated to be more than $5 billion, to pay for benefits.

The USDA said it doesn’t have the ability to use those funds, but Attorney General William Tong (D-Connecticut) said that interpretation is not supported by law.
“It is wrong to starve people into submission and that is what this president is doing,” he said, flanked by Democratic state lawmakers and Rep. Jahana Hayes (D-5th District).
