COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Melissa made landfall this afternoon in southwestern Jamaica near New Hope as a powerful category 5 hurricane. Max sustained winds at landfall were around 185 MPH. Die to land interaction, Melissa is a bit weaker, but still a very strong Category 4 Hurricane as the center of circulation moves off the island.

Cuba’s coastline will take the second landfall of Melissa and that is expected tonight. Significant impacts such as flooding, storm surge, and strong winds are expected in Jamaica and Cuba into Wednesday.

From there, Melissa will accelerate over the Bahamas and move into the Atlantic by the end of this week. It will likely make a close call with Bermuda as a hurricane on Halloween.
