HEIDELBERG, Miss. (WTVA) — A truck transporting monkeys crashed in south Mississippi.
The crash happened on Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 59 north of Heidelberg, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department announced.
The truck came from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana — according to the sheriff's department — and some of the Rhesus monkeys escaped.
“The monkeys carry hepatitis C, herpes and COVID,” the sheriff’s department announced earlier.
However, Tulane University later shared the following statement with WTVA:
“Non-human primates at the Tulane National Biomedical Research Center are provided to other research organizations to advance scientific discovery. The primates in question belong to another entity and are not infectious. We are actively collaborating with local au
