NEW YORK (PIX11) — Tuesday should have been payday for a lot of federal employees.
But the government shutdown is in its 28th day.
Air traffic controllers are required to work, but some staffing issues have resulted in delays at airports. They missed their first full paycheck on Tuesday.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation stood with the president of the union to thank the controllers for their work and discuss the impact.
The number of planes in the air is directly related to the air traffic controllers on the job.
Air traffic controllers are also watching their bank accounts. Joe Segretto has 18 years on the job.
”The pressure is real. We have people trying to keep airplanes safe and trainees learning a new job. Now they have to worry about how they pay bills,” Segretto said.
