MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Five MSCS board members’ seats will be on the ballot next year, following the Shelby County Commission’s vote.

In an 8 to 4 vote, the Shelby County Commission decided to override Mayor Lee Harris’ veto on school board elections.

This means that the seats of five current Memphis-Shelby County School board members will be on the 2026 ballot.

“I followed the argument that the opposition was making. For me, it just came down to the system is in dire need of oversight and just overhaul. And I have not, for the past two years, heard anyone bring a plan or a sense of urgency to acknowledge the issue,” said Shelby County Commissioner Britney Thornton of District 10.
