KENTUCKY, USA — On Tuesday, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear joined several other U.S. states in a lawsuit that aims to keep families from losing SNAP benefits amid the government shutdown, which is on day 28.
SNAP benefits, food-purchasing assistance for low-income households, will be suspended this weekend for the first time since the program's inception.
Millions of families across the country who rely on the federal program won't get their monthly benefits, including nearly 600,000 people in Kentucky.
More than half of U.S. states are suing the U.S. Department of Agriculture and its secretary, Brooke Rollins, for indefinitely suspending benefits during the shutdown.
The coalition on the lawsuit is led by 23 attorneys general and three governors, one of whom is Kentucky's governor.
