FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ohio — Five months after two Mifflin Township police officers were shot during a traffic stop, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says it can no longer keep a deputy dedicated to the township.
The sheriff’s office stepped in to help keep residents safe after the May 28 shooting, which sidelined 40% of Mifflin Township’s small police force. Both injured officers have since returned to duty — one on light duty due to the extent of his injuries.
In an internal email obtained by 10TV through a public records request, the sheriff’s office told patrol staff it would no longer post overtime for Mifflin Township coverage. The email, dated Sept. 29 and written by Major Carl Hickey, instructed deputies not to take unnecessary risks when responding to calls in the township.
