At the New England Aquarium, enrichment programs are credited with enhancing and extending the lifespans of the penguins in their care.
The aquarium's programs include one-on-one training sessions and habitat modifications, which have significantly improved the quality of life for these penguins.
While penguins in the wild typically live 10 to 15 years, those at the New England Aquarium have been known to reach their 30s and 40s. Mia Luzietti, the aquarium's senior penguin trainer, attributes this increased lifespan to the variability of enrichment and training successes, which encourage the penguins to participate in their own care. The absence of pollution and overfishing in the exhibit also contributes to their longevity.
