NACOGDOCHES, Texas — With Election Day just days away, Nacogdoches County officials and voters are weighing in on a major proposal that could reshape the county’s approach to public safety.

Proposition A is a $75 million bond proposal to rebuild a new jail facility — a move they said is necessary to address overcrowding, outdated infrastructure and rising costs to house inmates out of county.

“It’s not a want by any means. It’s a need,” Nacogdoches County Sheriff Jason Bridges said.

The bond would fund the construction of a modern jail design capable of holding up to 570 inmates, with a focus on mental health and medical facilities.

Bridges said the investment would save taxpayers money by reducing the more than $1.5 million the county currently spends each year on housing inmates out
