A young cricketer is fighting for his life in hospital after being injured during a pre-game warm-up in Melbourne yesterday.

Paramedics were called to a game at Wally Tew Reserve in Ferntree Gully in Melbourne's outer-east about 4.45pm.

It is believed the player, a teenage boy, was hit in the head by a ball during the warm-up before a Twenty20 match being held at the ground.

The boy was treated at the scene by an ambulance team and Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedics.

He was taken to Monash Medical Centre in Clayton in a critical condition.

Cricket Australia, Cricket Victoria and the Ringwood and District Cricket Association have been contacted for comment.
