MPs are set to be lobbied in Westminster to support a long-standing West Midlands campaign aimed at tackling the issue of 'ghost plates'. Simon Foster, the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for West Midlands, along with Sarah Coombes, MP for West Bromwich, believe that Parliament 'needs to act' to eradicate the use of illegal number plates.
They plan to visit Parliament on December 2 to discuss the campaign with MPs and advocate for stricter measures.
In September, Mr Foster and the Road Policing Unit of West Midlands Police initiated Operation Phantom, utilising advanced technology to uncover thousands of illegal number plates in use across Birmingham. In just a fortnight, they identified 4,335 instances of these non-compliant plates at a single location in Birmingham.
