Slate Belt police are warning residents to be cautious after five rabies cases were confirmed in the past few weeks in the region.

Animal Control Officer Christine Mammi said the recent cases were found in the past two weeks in Wind Gap, Pen Argyl, Mt. Bethel and Plainfield Township.

All involved raccoons and the raccoons tested positive for rabies, she said.

Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center has also had some recent rabies cases, Mammi said.

Last week, Blairstown Township, New Jersey, officials reported an elderly couple who had been feeding a feral cat for years required medical attention after the cat attacked them and tested positive for rabies.

The amount of local rabies cases is “not at all” normal for this time of year, Mammi said.
