BOSTON —

Massachusetts state regulators are limiting the proposed winter rate hike for Eversource gas customers, NewsCenter 5's Ben Simmoneau has learned.

Eversource's NSTAR sought a delivery charge increase of about 12%, Simmoneau previously reported . Combined with a 14-17% surge in the cost of gas, the company estimated in September that bills could be at least 13% more costly overall.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities, Wednesday's order will save customers an estimated $45 million this year.

As justification for the order, the DPU said the utility did not meet all of the performance metrics previously set in a 2020 order.

Eversource's NSTAR provides service to roughly 303,000 customers in 51 cities and towns.
