ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- With Halloween days away, many will question how to dispose of carved pumpkins before they begin to rot. Rather than throwing them away, residents around the Capital Region can either donate or participate in pumpkin-smashing compost events.

Pumpkins for recycling should not have any paint or glitter on them, and all candles must be removed. According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, pumpkins and gourds are great for composting, and it's recommended that residents avoid leaving pumpkins out for wildlife to consume.
