LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Animal rescue Paws 4 the Cause is warning people about a scam where people are pretending to be them and asking for money.

They said the scammer preyed on a lady who posted about her lost dog on various social media groups in hopes of finding him.

How the scam worked

The lost dog poster for Pup Pup includes information about him and the owner’s number. This is what Paws 4 the Cause said the scammer used to call Pup Pup’s owner to then spit out a lie in hopes of making a quick buck.

“We built our reputation and we have a very strong reputation out there and yeah, it really was upsetting yesterday,” said Anita Spreitzer with Paws 4 the Cause.

This week, the Paws 4 the Cause name was used by a scammer who preyed on a Lexington dog owner during a vulnerable time.
