ORIGINAL REPORT: A malfunctioning freight train brought traffic to a standstill in Bergenfield and Dumont on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 29, authorities confirmed.
The train became disabled near several crossings just as schools were letting out, causing major backups throughout the area around 2:50 p.m., according to Bergenfield Police Lt. William Duran.
Duran confirmed that the train had experienced a mechanical malfunction, prompting a temporary stop while crews worked to resolve the issue.
Traffic was heavily affected on surrounding roads in both Bergenfield and Dumont, with long delays reported by residents and motorists.
