A Baton Rouge man has been arrested on a count of attempted second degree murder after police said he shot another man in the back.

The shooting happened at a woman's residence on Chippewa Street, around 2 p.m. Jan. 11.

Steve Sanford, 41, was visiting with the woman at her residence. The woman told police she and Sanford have had an on-again-off-again relationship for more than 8 years.

Another man arrived at the residence, wanting to speak to the woman. Sanford interjected himself and the two men began arguing.

The situation between Sanford and the man escalated, with Sanford becoming aggressive and allegedly charging him, according to the affidavit for his arrest.

The man shoved Sanford back against the wall and tried to prevent Sanford from attacking him further.
