PHOENIX — Gov. Katie Hobbs announced Wednesday her office is deploying $1.8 million to support residents affected by the potential loss of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
The food benefits are projected to not be funded starting in November due to the ongoing government shutdown. Democrats have called upon the Trump administration to utilize a contingency fund to keep the SNAP benefits funded.
Hobbs said she's allocating $1.8 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to support food banks across the state and a new emergency program called "Food Bucks Now," which will provide $30 vouchers for SNAP recipients to buy produce at farmers markets.
Over 950,000 people in Arizona received SNAP benefits each month during fiscal year 2024, records show.
